Research Labs - [ Skill Acquisition Laboratory (SAL) ]
Everyone admires experts and would like to learn more about the nature of their skills. Cognitive psychologists have sought to uncover the nature of learning and how expert skills are acquired. Research performed at the Skill Acquisition Laboratory (SAL) contributes to this enterprise through two distinct yet related lines of research. One line explores the cognitive processes that support our ability to comprehend problem-solving situations and to use our comprehension to select appropriate problem-solution methods. The other investigates how we learn to attend to relevant information and to ignore irrelevant information while discriminating between events in the environment. Our research is enriched through a complex interplay between theoretical considerations, the results obtained through computational modeling, and empirical observations of human performance.
